When other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks to win a highly competitive scholarship and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April.

Liz Murray, a 22-year-old American girl, has been writing a real-life story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drug-addicted parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.

Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homeless. At night, she lived on the streets. “What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society.” She wrote in her book Breaking Night.

She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that come easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that “next to nothing could hold me down”. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. “I love my parents so much. They are drag addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time.”

Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is “as simple as making a decision”.

B

American travelers plan to take 10 million more trips this summer than last, despite increases in hotel rates, airfare, car-rental costs and gasoline prices. Thanks to high consumer confidence, people will travel more often, stay longer and spend more money on their vacations this year.

“It’s going to be a record travel season,” says Jason Ader, a senior analyst with investment bank Bear, Stearn&Co. “The economy’s strong. Consumers feel good. The stock market’s up. And the prices we’re seeing are as high as they’ve been since we’ve been keeping records, and that’s since the fifties.”

In all, American vacationers will take more than 270 million trips this summer-4 percent more than this year, according to the travel association. The top 10 destinations are Florida, California, Hawaii, Colorado, New York, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Washington state and Washington.

During such trips, a family of four will spend $213 a day for meals and lodging-an increase of $3 from last year, according to a forecast released by the Travel Industry Association of America. In some cases, price increases are expected to double the inflation rate, which was 2.1 percent in March. The average daily price tag on a hotel room will increase 3.9 percent to $78.67, according to a report by Price Waterhouse Coopers and Bear, Stearns.

Traveling by car this summer is expected to cost about $10.66 per 100 miles, which covers gas, tires and maintenance, according to the American Automobile Association. The recent increase in gasoline prices should make long road trips more expensive. Nevertheless, car-rental companies are expecting more leisure rentals this summer compared with last and are pushing prices up accordingly.

Thickets on the major North American airlines will continue to increase, with prices jumping 10 percent by year’s end, according to the Price Waterhouse Coopers report. But the higher prices are not turning vacationers away from air travel. “Given the strong economy, and if all other factors are constant, travelers will most likely take to the domestic skies in record numbers despite higher costs to the wallet,” says Dexter Wood, a Price Waterhouse Coopers consultant.

40. One of the reasons Americans are more likely to travel this year is that __________.

A. airlines tickets are less expensive B. more and more Americans have cars

C. the stock market is up D. travel agents are offering special deals

41. Car-rental companies expect more rentals this summer, despite __________.

A. the poor economy B. increased air travel

C. increased ownership of private cars D. higher gasoline prices

42. The phrase “higher costs to the wallet” (Para. 6) most probably means __________.

A. increased prices B. more expensive wallets

C. higher taxes D. higher levels of anxiety

43. The author’s purpose in writing this text is __________.

A. to investigate why people choose to travel

B. to celebrate the grand American tradition of travel

C. to encourage more Americans to travel

D. to describe the travel market in the United States

This extract from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn takes place early in the story. Huck has run away from his father, who treats him badly and he has just found the runaway slave Jim hiding on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. The two decide to build a raft and sail down the river together.

The river went on rising and rising for ten or twelve days, till at last it was over the banks. The water was three or four feet deep on the island in the low places. In the daytime we paddled all over the island in the canoe because it was very cool and shady in the deep woods even if the sun was blazing outside.

One night we caught a little section of a raft. It was 12 feet wide and about 15 or 16 feet long and the top stood above water 6 or 7 inches, a solid level floor. We could see logs go by in the daylight, sometimes, but we let them go. We didn’t show ourselves in the daylight.

Another night, when we were up at the head of the island, just before daylight, a wooden house came floating down, on the west side, tilting(傾斜) over considerably. We paddled out and got aboard- climbed in at an upstairs window. But it was too dark to see yet, so we made the canoe fast and sat in her to wait for daylight.

When we could finally see into the house, we saw that there was something lying on the floor in the far corner that looked like a man. So Jim said, “Hello, you!”

But it didn’t move. So I shouted again, and then Jim said, “It’s a dead man. Yes, indeed. He’s been shot in the back. I reckon he’s been dead two or three days. Come in, Huck, but don’t look at his face. It’s ghastly.”

There were two old dirty dresses hanging against the wall and some men’s clothes too. We put the lot into the canoe. It might come in useful. There was a boy’s old straw hat on the floor. I took that too. There was an old chest and an old trunk with the hinges broken. They were open but there was nothing left in them. The way things were scattered about, we reckoned the people left in a hurry and couldn’t carry off most of their stuff.

When we were ready to leave, we were a quarter of a mile below the island and it was nearly daylight. I made Jim lie down in the canoe and cover himself up because if he sat up, people could tell he was a slave a good way off.

After breakfast I wanted to talk about the dead man and guess how he came to be killed but Jim didn’t want to. He said it would bring bad luck so I didn’t say any more. But I couldn’t stop thinking about it and wishing I knew who had shot the man and what they had done it for.

48. Huck and Jim paddled their canoe across the island because ________.

A. the river had risen B. the water was deep

C. they had found a canoe D. they were looking for a cool shady place

49. They only left the shelter of the island ________.

A. at night B. during the daylight

C. after they found the dead man in the wooden house

D. when they saw something interesting floating down the river

50. When they reached the wooden house, ________.

A. it floated smoothly B. the door of the house had been broken

C. they climbed in through the window D. they had to paddle fast to keep up with it

51. They thought that the owners of the house had left a lot of things behind because________.

A. they didn’t need everything

B. the hinges of the trunk were broken

C. those things were thought to be of little use

D. they had been forced to leave the house very quickly

A “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web called a “bog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.

There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.

A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenager girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.

However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.

At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it.

One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. It involves much useful information for readers. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called The Weblog Handbook. It has been translated into four languages so far.

Ms Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything-politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from online bank accounts.

52. The passage is written mainly to ______.

A. tell readers about blogs B. tell readers how to write blogs

C. introduce a way of reading on blogs

D. introduce an Internet computer Web site called “blog”

53. From the text we can learn that blogs cover almost everything EXCEPT ______.

A. different ideas B. medical advice C. advertisements D. account codes

54. According to this passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Politicians don’t use blogs at all.

B. A lot of bloggers no longer write or read blogs.

C. Those who like to use blogs are mostly teenage girls.

D. Dave Winer closed his “weblogs.com” because of money shortage.

55. The reason why Rebecca’s Pocket is still going strong is that ______.

A. it was created by a woman

B. it is about the history of books

C. it provides plenty of useful information and advice

D. it has editions in at least four different languages

書面表達

《中學生英文報》“幫您解憂”欄目編輯收到來自中學生李華的一封信。請先讀這封信,然后以編輯的身份給他回信。

Dear editor,

I live in a wealthy family of three but I don’t feel very happy because I am forbidden from doing what I want to, such as surfing the Internet, buying my favourites, or playing with my friends and so on. They just ask me to study all day. I feel my parents are too hard on me. I think I have no freedom and I always feel quite upset. What shall I do? I’ll greatly appreciate it if you could give me some advice.

Li Hua

回信應寫明以下幾點:

1、 敘述你以前的類似經歷。

2、 建議他/她:1)多與父母交流 2)多理解父母 3)……

注意:1、不得抄寫原信。2、首尾句已給,不計入詞數。3、字數:120左右

Dear Li Hua,

I can understand how you feel. When I was young,

I hope my advice is helpful to you.

Dear Li Hua,

I can understand how you feel. When I was young, I was given little freedom like you. After I communicate with my parents several times, they came to understand me. So first talk to your parents to let them know you are wise enough to manage your own business well.

It is well-known that all parents in the world love their children though sometimes they are a bit strict and serious. You’d better put your yourself in their position. If you can spend your time and money in a proper way and deal with your own business well, I’m sure they will trust you and you will enjoy more freedom.

In addition, I want to say most of your parents’ requirements are reasonable and your own studies should be put first.

I hope my advice is helpful to you.
