Step1. Revision
Ask students to translate some phrases and sentences in vocabulary.

I’m sure everyone here knows Charles Dickens. He was the greatest representative of English critical novelist in the 19th century. He wrote 14 novels and many other short stories in his lifetime. His style was realistic and humors .He gave us a vivid picture of life of ordinary people. His works shows sympathy for the poor.
Read the speaking material to enable students know about the background of the novel “A Christmas Carol”.

Today we are going to read the novel “A Christmas Carol”. Part1. (beginning---“Scrooge falls asleep”)
1. Scan Part1 and answer the following question:
1) How many people were mentioned?
Four. Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Fred, A gentleman
2. Read it again, and answer the following questions:
1) When did this story happen?
The story happened on the evening before Christmas, that is to say, at Christmas Eve.
2) What was Ebenezer Scrooge? What kind of this man was? Which word is he always commenting everything?
Maybe Scrooge was a businessman or a boss. He was such a mean, cold, hard, selfish old man. He cares for nothing but money. He was always commenting everything “Humbug”.
3) Who was Bob Cratchit? What did he want to do?
Bob was working for Scrooge as a clerk. He wanted to go home to spend Christmas Day with his family.
4) What did the gentlemen want Scrooge to do?
The gentleman was raising money to buy the poor some meat, drink and other basic needs. He wanted Scrooge to open his heart to the poor. But Scrooge didn’t agree to it. He would rather make them hungry to death than help them.
So all of them left, leaving Scrooge alone. He fell asleep. Then what happened in his dream?

poor 此處意為“不好的，不充分的，不充足的”。

e.g. He had his pocket picked in the supermarket.
4. Anyway I suppose I will have to let you have it. 不管怎么說，我想我會答應你的。
anyway 副詞，意思是“無論如何，即使如此(whatever the facts may be; in spite of this)”。
e.g. Whatever you say, I’m going anyway. 不論你說什么，無論如何我也要去。

leave sb/sth alone/be ---not disturb or interfere with sb/sth 不打擾或不干預某人[某事物]。

此句中occupy 意為“使忙碌，使從事”。

occupy 用法小結：
1) 占據，充滿（時間，空間，某人的頭腦等）。
e.g. The speech occupied three hours.發言工占去了三個小時。
A bed occupied the corner of the room.床占去了房間的一角
2)（軍事）占領（國家、陣地等）。
The army occupied the enemy’s capital. 軍隊占領了敵國首都
3) 占用，占有（房屋、土地等）。

close (sth) up “（尤指暫時）關閉（某事物）”。

close up 還可以指傷口愈合。
The cut took a long time to close up.傷口經過很長時間才愈合
15. Alone is what you are, and what you have been. 你是孤單的，你一直都是孤單的。
此句是倒裝。alone 是副詞，在句中作表語，這里是表語前置；其的主語為what you are 和what you have been.
Integrating skills:

but 此處是副詞，意為“只，僅僅”。

3. That’s not what life is about! 錢不是生活的全部！
what life is about 是從句作表語。
4.You only have eyes for money. 你就只愛錢。
(only) have eyes for sb/sth. / have eyes (only) for sb/sth 只對……感興趣；（只）愛戀/喜歡……
e.g. In Amsterdam, I had eyes only for the Rembrandts.在阿姆斯特丹，我只想看倫勃朗的名畫。
All the girls liked Fred, but he had eyes only for Helen.
姑娘們全都喜歡弗雷德，但是他卻只對海倫感興趣。
have an eye/a good eye for… 意為“對……有眼光”。
He has an eye for the fair and the beautiful. 他有審美眼光。
5. You’ve got it all wrong. 你全弄錯了。
此句中 all 副詞，意為“completely 完全地”，修飾 wrong；wrong 是形容詞，作it 的賓語補足語。
6. Nobody knows it better than you do, poor fellow. 沒有人比你更了解他了，可憐的人。
know sb/sth well 對……熟知，對……很了解；do 代指knows。
