一、交際用語
You must have been mad to speak to the servant.你跟那個仆人講話，準是發瘋了。
must have been中的must表示揣測，作“一定是、準是、想必是”解。must后跟不帶to的不定式（即動詞原形），表示對現在的事的推測；must后跟不定式的完成式，表示對過去發 生事的推測。例如：
Rose must catch a cold；she has a high fever.羅斯準是感冒了，她在發高燒。（對現在的推測）
Rose must have caught a cold；she had a high fever last night.羅斯準是感冒了，她昨晚發高燒。（對過去的推測）
情態動詞can't，couldn't，may，might后也可跟類似的兩種形式，分別表示對現在、過去發生的事的推測。例如：
She can't be in the room now.
他現在不可能在房間。
You might have got the wrong number.你（剛才）也許撥錯號了。
can't/couldn't后間或跟不定式的完成式表示“想必不可能一直在進行”的意思。例如：
It's very late now.Jack can't have been waiting at the bus stop.現在很晚了，杰克不可能一直在車站上等著。

1.stay hidden
stay除表示“留（下），（暫）住”等意思外，還表示“保持（某種狀態）”，這時stay用作連系動詞，不僅可跟形容詞，還可跟副詞和過去分詞等。例如：
The shop stays open until seven o'clock.那商店一直開到七點。
The boy often went hungry and stayed dressed in that dirty coat.那男孩經常挨餓，老是穿著那件臟外套。
2.let…in
let可表示“讓處于某個位置”，和不同的副詞或介詞連用，有較活的譯法。例如：

三、句型
It was the first time we had spoken together.這是我們第一次相互交談。
這是一個帶有定語從句的省略了關系詞的特殊句型。如果談到過去，從句就用過去完成時。例如：

如果涉及現在情況，就用現在完成時。

1.中心思想
This passage describes the terrible wrong that had been done to Dr Manette and the cruel way the nobles treated the peasants，which brought about the French Revolution in the end.The love story in the text and what happened to Charles clearly show that the French revolution was only a revolution of punishment to the nobles.
2.段落大意
The whole text can be divided into four parts：
Part 1（ParA.1～4）
Wrong was done to Dr Manette.
Part 2（ParA.5～6）
Charles and Sydney were in love with Lucie and Charles hated the way of life of the rich French nobles.
Part 3（ParA.7～9）
Charles was recognized as a noble and sentenced to death.
Part 4（ParA.10～11）
Sydney managed to save Charles and died in place of his friend for his true love for Lucie.
二、單詞和詞組
1.put…in prison
put…in/into prison意為“把……關進監獄”，類似的用法還有：send…to prison送進監獄；throw…into prison投…進監獄；shut/keep…in prison把人關在監獄。這里prison均用作不可數名詞，表示被監禁狀態，前面通常不加冠詞。例如：
Law-breakers are put in/into prison.
犯法的人都要坐牢。
但如果prison指監獄的房子則是可數名詞，前面加冠詞。例如：
Lucie went to the prison to visit her husband.露西到監獄去看了她的丈夫。
2.suffer…from
動詞suffer意為“受痛苦、受損害，遭受，患（病）”，既可用作不及物動詞，又可用作及物動詞，還常和from連用。例如：
I won't stand by and let him suffer like this.我不會袖手旁觀，讓他這樣受苦。
He suffered a great deal from cold and hunger.他深受寒冷與饑餓之苦。
She suffers from stomachaches.
她患胃痛病。
3.attend
attend通常表不“出席，上（學，課）”，但在本課中表示“看護、照料；服侍”的意思。例如：
Last night he attended a movie.

Martin himself attended the sick man.
馬丁親自照看那病人。
If you go out，who will attend to the baby？

4.set fire to…
set fire to…表示“放火燒……、使……著火”的意思，也可用set…on fire來表示。例如：
Who set fire to the shop？（或 Who set the shop on fire？）是誰放火燒商店的？
The waste paper should be set fire to.這些廢紙應當燒掉。
set fire to與burn都有“燃燒”的意思，但前者強調“點火”這個動作，而后者卻指“燃燒”過程。例如：
They set fire to the house，and it was burnt （down）to the ground.他們放火燒房子，房子被燒光。
5.address n.vt.
本課中的address用作動詞，表示“（在信上）寫姓名地址”的意思。例如：
Please address your letter to the head-master's office.請在信上寫好地址寄給該校校長室。
This is a wrongly addressed letter.
這封信地址寫錯了。
6.or rather
or rather作“更確切地說”（exactly speak- ing）解，常用來糾正已經說過的話，使之更確切。例如：
He arrived very late last night，or rather， in the early hours this morning.他昨晚很晚才到達，更確切地說，今天凌晨才到。
三、句型
1.He hated the way they treated the peasant.
他痛恨他們對待農民的態度。
此句中way意為“方法，手段，態度”。當way后面被定語從句修飾時，常用that來代替in which而且常被省去。例如：
I liked the way（that）she organized the meeting.我喜歡他組織會議的方法。
Do it the way I showed you.照我給你做的樣子去做。
2.On reading the letter，he found…
看了信，他得知……
On reading the letter意為“一看信，他就…”。介詞on/upon作“在……時，在……之后”解，后跟ing形式，相當于用as soon as引導的狀語從句。例如：
On seeing the snake，the girl screamed.一看到蛇，那女孩便叫了起來。
介詞on/upon后跟名詞時，也可作此義解。例如本課中“on his arrival in Paris…”（當他一到達巴黎……）。又如：
On his return from his vacation，he began writing his first novel.他休假一回來，就開始寫他的第一部小說。
四、語法
動詞ing形式（二）
動詞ing形式可用作定語和狀語。當單個動詞ing形式作定語時，放于被修飾名詞之前。
例如：a sleeping boy（一個熟睡的男孩），當ing形式為一個短語時，放在被修飾名詞之后。例如：
There is a boy sleeping soundly under the tree.樹下有一個男孩，正睡得香。
動詞ing形式通常指該動詞與句子謂語的動作同時發生，如要表示先于句子謂語的動作，則用having done的形式。試比較：
Living far from school，he is often late.他住在遠離學校的地方，所以經常遲到。
Having folded the letter，Charles put it carefully in his pocket.查爾斯折好信后，小心地把信放進口袋。

1.for a start
for a start作“首先”解，口語中常用。如：

2.date
