T: Yesterday, we’ve learned something about English poetry. And we mentioned all together 8 poets. Do you still remember?
S: Yes.
T: Good. Now make a guess who are they. The first one, he is the most famous writer in the world. He wrote many plays. One of them is Romeo and Juliet. Who is he?
S: Shakespeare.
T: Correct. William Shakespeare. Now the next one, He is a very handsome romantic poet. One of his works is the Isles of Greece. He took part in the independence war for Greece.

S: Poetry plays with sounds, words and grammar.
T: Correct! Poetry plays with sounds, words and grammar . Do you know what does “play with” here means? E.g. Don’t play with fire.
S: 玩耍。
T: Good. So what does this sentence mean. Poetry plays with sounds, words and grammar?
S: 詩(shī)歌靈活運(yùn)用聲音，詞匯和語(yǔ)法。
T: Very good. Now look at the last sentence. Poetry also calls up all the colors, feelings, experiences and curious images of a dream world. What does “call up” mean here?
S: 召喚，喚起。
T: Good. So how to say “ 你們喚起了我對(duì)高中生活的回憶。”
S: Your life call up my memory about my middle school life.

T: Now let’s look at paragraph 2. It tells us something about Chinese poetry. Let’s listen to the tape and find out the feature of Chinese poetry. What is the feature of Chinese poetry?

S: The number of lines and the number of characters in each line.
T: Yes. Good. Here feature means “ 特征”. So how to say”我的手機(jī)有很多特征,比如游戲,音樂(lè),上網(wǎng)等等”.
S: My mobile phone has many features, for example, playing games, listening to the music, surfing the internet and so on.
T: Yes. So poetry often fallows special patterns of rhythm and rhyme. “follow” here means “ 遵循，聽(tīng)從”。Then how to say “不聽(tīng)老人言，吃虧在眼前”?
S: If you don’t follow the olds advice, you’ll fall into a pit.
T: Correct! Now look at the second sentence:” Poems by Du Fu, Li Bai and Wang Wei among others stand out in the halls of glory.” What does “stand out ”here mean?
S: 突出, 引人注意.
T: Right, so “stand out in the halls of glory” means?
S: 兀立在榮光寶殿之上.
T: Good! Now look at this man. Who is he?
S: 姚明!

T: Well, these two paragraphs introduced the poetry and Chinese poetry. Now let’s look at paragraph 3. This paragraph tells us something about the early poets. Let’s listen to the tape. While listening, please pay attention to the question: Whose poetry reminds us of Su Dongpo. Are you clear?
S: Yes.

S: John Donne.
T: Yes. He is John Donne. He always uses the surprising images and it reminds us of Su Dongpo. Now look at the first sentence. “Despite its short history,” what does “it” here refer to?
S: The history of English poetry.
T: Good. Although the history of English poetry is so short, there are still a lot of good poets around. One is Shakespeare. Look at the fourth line. Shakespeare is most famous for his plays. Here be famous for means?
S: 以……著名．
T: Good. What about “be famous as”?
S: 作為……而著名．
T: Now let’s take Yao Ming for another example. 姚明以打籃球而著名．
S: Yao Ming is famous for playing basketball.
T: Well, how to say”姚明作為籃球運(yùn)動(dòng)員而出名．”?
S: Yao Ming is famous as a basketball player.
T: Good. Now let’s look at the sixth line. Chinese readers admire his works because his use of surprising images that reminds them of the works of the poets such as Su Dongpo. This sentence is a little long. Who’d like to translate this sentence?

T: Very good. You’ve got it! Let’s see. What does ”remind of” here mean?
S: 使某人想起
T: Good. So how to say”五星紅旗使我想起了我的祖國(guó)。”?
S:The five-star flag reminds me of my country.
T: Good. Well. Let’s move on. Look at this sentence” Once published, his work became famous for the absence of rhyme at the end of each line. ” Have you found out this sentence?
S: Yes.
T: What does “absence” here mean?
S: 缺少
T: Good. “absence”has two means. Now look at the slide. The first one is”缺席”. So how to say”缺課”?

T: Good. Absence has another meaning, just now we’ve said.”缺少” . Then how to say”缺水”?

T: Correct! “l(fā)ead to ”has another meaning. E.g. All roads lead to Rome. What does this sentence means?
S: 條條大路通羅馬.
T: Yes! You are clever! So “l(fā)ead to” here means?
