Walking down the main street, youll notice the antique gray-tiled houses on both sides, mostly constructed from bamboo and wood. Good afternoon, everyone. Our tour coach is now in the Shapingba District of Chongqing, and were almost at our next scenic spot. Can you guess where were heading? Thats right, were going to Ciqikou.
As you can see, the gateway to Ciqikou is engraved with the towns name. Ciqikou is situated on the bank of the Jialing River, about 14 kilometers west of Chongqing Municipality. It reminds me of an old Chinese proverb: "One flagstone road, and one thousand years of Ciqikou."
The history of Ciqikou can be traced back for more than 700 years. Theres a legend about the early Ming emperor Jianwen. In 1402, he was usurped by his uncle Zhu Di and had to take refuge. He came to Chongqing and shaved his head, hiding himself in a temple here. By coincidence, there were four big words "Longyin Buddhist Temple" on the wall, so the town was given the name Longyin.
However, during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the town was famous for its production of porcelain. To date, over 20 old kiln sites have been discovered here. Its because of the importance of the porcelain industry that the name was changed from Longyin to Ciqikou, which translates to "Porcelain Village."
Ciqikou is also a source of BaCi culture. Many famous people lived here during the Second Sino-Japanese War, including the poet Guo Moruo and the Nobel Prize-winning scientist Samuel Chao Chung Ting. As you explore the town, youll see tea bars, artists studios, and Shu Embroidery workshops. Dont forget to pick up some Shu Embroidery as a souvenir of your visit.
